Many generations of mothers have appreciated the 
significance of the boys gown.
Over the centuries, gowns have been made from different fabrics. During the 18th century, robes or gowns were sewn from silks and satins with embroidery and special trims.
By the 1800’s, fashion dictated a style of fine linen or cotton lawn fabric with white embroidery. In Victorian times when pregnancy was a private time with the expectant mother confined to the house, the expectant mother often created a hand made christening outfit. Often the occasion was the mother’s first public appearance after the birth. The ceremony was a special family time which was impeccibly planned and much anticipated.
Baby Blessing Outfits
By the mid 1800’s the christening gowns became more lavish with very fine detailed white embroidery. The needlework had intricate cutwork and fillings. The detailed decorative handiwork was called Ayshire work. The gown of this period seemed lavish, but was surpassed in grandness by those of the early 1900’s. Exquisitely fine white embroidery, yards of lace, fine pin tucks and intricate decorative bodices were the style of the day. The garment was now a two-piece outfit with a gown plus a cap to protect the baby from the cold outside air.
Outer baptism garments have been a part of the christening outfit at least since the Edwardian times of the early 1900’s. Over the years, the outer garment has been described as a baptism shawl, cape or christening robe. Designed to protect the baby during the trip to the church, the shawl, cape or robe also added a beautiful touch to keepsake pictures.
To this day, a christening gown may be used for all a family’s children and may even be passed on to future generations. After many ceremonies, the simple piece became a treasured family heirloom.
